Local Consignment - Global Audience

Spirit & Gems is a local consignment business in Middletown, Virginia. Accepted items are sold through live online auctions to a nationwide audience of collectors, dealers, and buyers, so items are not limited to local bidders.

By appointment only

Consignment intake is scheduled so each consignor receives proper review time.

Long-term consignors

We are looking for ongoing relationships with people who regularly have good-fit items to sell.

Step-by-step consignment process

01Schedule an appointmentMessage, call, or email before bringing items. Intake is by appointment only.
02Bring items to our officeBring items clean, sorted, and ready for review. Bring a valid photo ID.
03We review the itemsWe look at condition, category, estimated demand, shipping practicality, authenticity concerns, and resale potential.
04Accepted items are organizedAccepted items may be assigned item numbers, descriptions, categories, reserve notes, and selling attempt information.
05Items sell live onlineItems are marketed and sold through live online auctions to collectors, dealers, and buyers nationwide.
06Transactions clearAfter buyers pay and transactions clear, commissions and approved adjustments are calculated.
07You receive payoutWednesdays are payout days after buyer payment has cleared.
08Unsold items are handledUnsold items or requested returns are generally ready for pickup on the next Wednesday after notice or final selling attempt.

Items we do not accept

  • Large or heavy furniture
  • Mattresses, appliances, TVs, and large electronics
  • Large exercise equipment or large household items
  • Modern books unless antique or collectible
  • Clothing unless vintage/designer and exceptional
  • Unsanitary, smoke-damaged, or moldy items
  • Items with insect or rodent damage
  • Hazardous materials
  • Food, alcohol, or tobacco products
  • Counterfeit, illegal, or restricted items
  • Items that cannot be shipped safely or economically
  • Extremely low-value items that cannot reasonably be sold

Clean

Items must be clean and appropriate for handling, photographing, storing, and shipping.

Shippable

Items must be small enough and safe enough to ship economically unless otherwise agreed.

Focused

Items should fit our jewelry, antiques, vintage decor, collectible, and estate focus.

Resale value

Items must have a reasonable resale value for live online auction selling.

Final intake decision: Acceptance is determined by Spirit & Gems at intake. Declined items must be taken back the same day unless other arrangements are made in writing.

Commission, selling attempts, pickup, and payout

Standard non-jewelry commissionFor each sold non-jewelry item, Spirit & Gems retains the greater of a $5.00 minimum commission or 40% of the final selling price, unless the premium commission applies.
Jewelry commissionJewelry items are not subject to the $5.00 minimum commission. Jewelry is charged a flat 40% commission of the final selling price unless the premium commission applies.
Premium consignmentsItems accepted as premium consignments with an anticipated or agreed value of $500.00 or more are subject to a 25% commission unless otherwise stated in writing.
Decor and general merchandise attemptsDecor and general merchandise may receive up to 3 weekly selling attempts.
Jewelry attemptsJewelry may receive up to 8 weekly selling attempts.
Earlier stopSpirit & Gems may stop attempts earlier if an item is not suitable for continued offering.
Payout dayWednesdays are payout days. Net proceeds are payable after the buyer has paid and the transaction has cleared.
Pickup dayUnsold items or requested returns are generally ready for pickup on the next Wednesday after notice or after the final selling attempt.
Pickup windowItems must be picked up within 14 calendar days after the Wednesday pickup date.
Unclaimed itemsItems not picked up within the 14-day pickup window may be considered abandoned and may be donated, disposed of, relisted, or otherwise handled by Spirit & Gems without further payment.
Spirit & Gems may deduct commissions, agreed fees, chargebacks, refunds, shipping issues, buyer disputes, or costs caused by inaccurate item information or other approved adjustments.

Consignor responsibilities and important terms

Ownership and authorityThe consignor must be the lawful owner or authorized agent for the items and must have the right to consign and sell them.
Accurate informationThe consignor is responsible for disclosing known defects, repairs, restrictions, authenticity concerns, special handling needs, or other material facts.
Condition and riskItems are accepted as-is. Spirit & Gems uses reasonable care while items are in its possession but is not responsible for ordinary wear, fragile components, undisclosed defects, market changes, or loss outside its reasonable control.
No guaranteeSpirit & Gems does not guarantee that any item will sell or that any item will sell for a particular amount.
Photography and promotionThe consignor permits Spirit & Gems to photograph, record, livestream, advertise, and describe accepted items for sale and promotional purposes.
Refusal of itemsSpirit & Gems may refuse items it cannot legally, safely, economically, or appropriately sell.
Nationwide sellingAccepted items may be offered through live online auctions, online live selling, or other selling channels selected by Spirit & Gems.
Agreement controlsThis page is a guide. The signed consignment agreement and any attached inventory sheets contain the official agreement between the parties.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Notes about repairs, defects, or special concerns

Please do not bring

  • Dirty or unsafe items
  • Items with odors, mold, insects, or rodent damage
  • Large furniture or large household goods
  • Items you are not authorized to sell
  • Items you cannot take back if declined

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Consignment intake is by appointment only. This helps us review items carefully and keep intake organized.

Can I consign regularly?

Yes. Spirit & Gems is looking for long-term consignors and ongoing relationships with people who regularly have jewelry, antiques, vintage decor, collectibles, or estate items to sell.

Do you accept full estates?

We can review estate collections and groups of items. Smaller, shippable, collectible, jewelry, antique, and vintage pieces are usually the best fit.

Do you only sell locally?

No. Spirit & Gems is local to Middletown, Virginia, but accepted items are sold through live online auctions to a nationwide audience.

What if an item does not sell?

Unsold items may receive the agreed number of selling attempts. After the final attempt or notice from Spirit & Gems, unsold items are generally ready for pickup on the next Wednesday.

When do I get paid?

Wednesdays are payout days. Payout is prepared after the buyer has paid and the transaction has cleared, minus commission and any approved adjustments.

Can I set a reserve?

Reserve requests can be discussed, but not every item is suitable for a reserve. Any reserve or special selling instruction should be documented in writing.

What happens if I do not pick up unsold items?

Items not picked up within the 14-day pickup window may be considered abandoned and may be donated, disposed of, relisted, or otherwise handled by Spirit & Gems.
